HQ VMWare Instructions

HQ VMWare Instructions

This page contains instructions for installing and using the HQ VMWare appliance. The instructions are taken from the ReadMe file that accompanies the appliance. The HQ VMWare appliance is composed of Debian Linux and a pre-configured installation of Hyperic HQ EE (Enterprise Edition). Both the HQ Server and an HQ Agent (for monitoring the local host) are included, and the Dashboard has been set up with some default portlets so that you can see a small subset of HQ's functionality.

What Will HQ VMWare Run On?

The HQ VMWare appliance runs on VMWare Server, Workstation, and Player. It does not work with VMware Fusion, ESX, GSX, Parallels, Zen, or Microsoft Virtual Machine.

Running the HQ VMWare Appliance

To get the HQ VMWare appliance up and running:

  1. Copy the tar'ed image file to your hard drive and decompress it in a convenient directory with this command (be sure to use the appropriate version number, instead of 3.x.x, in the command):
    tar -xvf hq-appliance-3.x.x-EE-server.tar
  2. If VMWare is not already installed on your system, download the VMWare player, install it, and run it.
  3. After the VMWare image is installed in your VMWare environment, start it as you would any other VMWare image.
  4. After the operating system finishes booting, open the player.
    It presents a login prompt.
  5. Use the account information below to log in to the system.
A message of the day will display after login showing the Web URL for the HQ interface along with a username and password to log in to it with.
If the index redirect doesn't happen automatically, try going directly to the /Login.do page.

To start monitoring other systems:

  1. Download a compatible Agent for your systems.
HQ VMWare comes with a single Agent — you have your choice of a Windows EE Agent and a Linux(X86) EE Agent — for monitoring the local host. Agents must be installed on any other systems you wish to monitor.
  2. Follow the review guide to learn more about what HQ can do for you.

User Accounts

The appliance comes with several pre-defined user accounts:

  • Two user accounts set up at the console level:
    • UserName root
      Password hqadmin
    • UserName hyperic
      Password hqadmin
  • One user account to log in to the Web interface of the HQ Server:
    • UserName hqadmin
      Password hqadmin

Optimal Settings

The HQ appliance needs 1G of RAM and 2-10G of disk space to run optimally. By default, the appliance has 2 disk partitions allocated for it: 500 MB for the root partition and 1G for /home, where HQ is installed. For evaluation purposes, the 1G partition should be more than adequate, but if the appliance is used in a production setting, we recommend that you create a 10G partition for /home and copy the contents over.

Troubleshooting

If the appliance starts up and cannot get a IP:

  1. Ensure that the Appliance can get a DHCP lease either from your local DHCP server or VMWare itself.
  2. Delete the file /etc/udev/rules.d/z25_persistent-net.rules and reboot the appliance.
This file hard-codes the mac address to eth0. When the appliance moves around, the mac address changes and the OS does not see a eth0. We disable this when building the appliance, but if you have networking issues, make sure to clear this file and reboot.
