Editing an Alert Definition

Available in HQ Open Source unless marked by * for HQ Enterprise only

This screen allows users to view and edit an existing alert definition. An alert definition comprises general properties, conditions that must be met for the alert to be triggered (and to stop being triggered), (optional) control actions that HQ performs each time the alert is triggered, and notification instructions for when the alert is triggered. Generally, all that is necessary for an alert definition is a name for the alert and at least one condition.

Sections on This Screen

Alert Properties

This section displays high-level information about the alert definition, including whether or not it is enabled (Active) and its Priority.

Condition Set

This section lists all the conditions that must be satisfied in order for the alert to be triggered.

Control Action

This section lists all the control actions that HQ will perform (it will perform the Control Type action on the Resource Name resource) each time the alert is triggered. The resource for which the alert is defined need not itself support control actions; these control actions can be performed against other resources when this resource's alert is triggered. (Consult the list of managed products for more information about which products support control actions.) Control actions (and therefore this section of the screen) can exist for alerts only at the resource level, not at the resource-type level.

Notification Tabs

This section lists all the notifications that HQ will perform when the alert is triggered. Users can configure the alert to:

Navigating via the Masthead Menu

Main screens in Hyperic contain a masthead menu. Users can navigate to the following parts of HQ using this menu:

Dashboard Takes users to the Dashboard, the starting screen in HQ, which displays information about resource health, recent alerts, recently performed auto-discovery scan, and control actions
Resources Click the menu name to access either Browse (takes users to the "Browse Resources" screen, where they can locate and navigate through information about all managed resources), Currently Down (takes users to the "Currently Down" screen, where they can look at all managed resources that are unavailable), Nagios Availability (available only when Nagios is installed), or Recently Viewed (provides a drop-down list of resources that the user has recently viewed. Selecting one of those resources takes the user to the "Current Health" screen for the resource).
Analyze Click the menu name to access either Reporting * (takes users to the "Reporting" screen, where they can generate all reports available in HQ), Alert Center (takes users to the Alert Center, where they can look at all alerts triggered across the system).
Administration Takes users (with "Administer Hyperic HQ Server Configuration" permissions) to the "Administration" screen, where they can manage the system-wide settings

The masthead also displays the two most recently triggered alerts. Users can click the alert's time to be taken to the alert detail.
