Creating a Google Mashup: Getting Hyperic HQ Alerts on your Google page

Objective

This step-by-step document will guide you in creating a Google Mashup, so that RSS alerts from Hyperic HQ appear on your Google home page. This document is intended for current/ prospective users of Hyperic HQ (either Network administrators or other users who have limited or no experience with HQ). After following the step-by-step instructions in this HOWTO, you should be set up and get your first Hyperic HQ RSS alerts on your Google page.

Getting Started: Enabling RSS Feeds

Step1

Login to your Hyperic HQ and look for RSS feeds in the dashboard. Select one of the RSS feed icons that you want to add to your Google homepage (for example: Recent Alerts).

After you select the 'Recent Alerts' RSS feed, you may see the Firefox feed-saving screen asking what you wish to do with this RSS feed. In the pull-down menu at the top of the page, select "Google". If you do not wish for this to be the default behavior when clicking on every RSS or Atom feed, make sure the checkbox is clear.

After you've selected 'Google' to save this RSS feed, click on the button to 'Add to Google homepage', as you see below.

After you click on the 'Add to Google homepage' button, you will be directed to the google homepage. You should now see the selected RSS feed (Recent Alerts) on your Google homepage.

Step3

To add other Hyperic HQ RSS feeds to your Google homepage, repeat Step 1 to Step 3 above.

Adding RSS Feeds to Google

This next section will demonstrate how to get your Hyperic HQ Recent Alerts into your customized Google page tabs.

Go to your Google homepage (eg., http://www.google.com/ig)

Click on Add Tab to create a separate section for Hyperic Alerts and give the Tab a name, for example, 'Hyperic Alerts'.

Step 6

You will need to provide the URLs for the different RSS feeds from Hyperic HQ. From your newly created 'Hyperic Alerts' tab, click on the 'Add Stuff' link in the upper right corner to specify the URLs for the different RSS feeds from Hyperic HQ.

Step 7

Click on Add RSS Feed to add the URL for the Hyperic HQ Favorite Resources RSS feed.

When you click on the Add RSS feed button, a box will appear where you can specify the URL for the RSS feed. Open up another browser window and go back to your HQ dashboard. Right-click on any of the RSS feeds available, and then copy the URL into the RSS feed box on the Google 'Add Stuff' page.

Step 8

To add the URLs for all the Hyperic HQ RSS feeds that you want to see on your iGoogle page, repeat Step 4 to Step 7 for each Hyperic HQ RSS feed. After you are done, click on Back to iGoogle home. In this example, we have added the RSS feeds for Favorite Resources, Recent Alerts, Recent Control Actions, and Problem Resources. When we click on Back to iGoogle home, we are directed back to the iGoogle homepage.

As you can see on the iGoogle home page, all of the Hyperic RSS feeds - Recent Alerts, Recent Control Actions, Problem Resources, and Favorite Resources can be exposed.
